On most flights, tucked beside the napkin and hand towel, rests a little blue tube.A tiny serum promising to reduce dark circles. Most of us know the truth.A drop or two cannot erase sleepless nights, relentless deadlines, stress, age, genetics, or the fatigue of a long journey. The dark circles usually survive the flight.

Yet the little blue tube remains.Carefully packaged. Elegantly presented. Quietly reassuring. Its practical effect may be doubtful. Its symbolism is not.For hidden within that tiny gesture lies a subtle message: “We see you. You matter.” Perhaps that is why human beings have always craved recognition.

Perhaps that is also why constitutions across the world came to speak of dignity.

Interestingly, dignity is not the same as liberty.

Liberty asks: What may I do?

Dignity asks: What am I worth?

A person may lose liberty through lawful imprisonment. A patient may lose independence through illness. An accused person may stand before a court facing the weight of serious allegations. Yet the Constitution insists that none of these circumstances diminish a person’s humanity.

The African philosophy of Ubuntu captures this beautifully: “A person is a person through other persons.”

Over time, dignity and liberty became constitutional companions.

Liberty gives us the freedom to choose.

Dignity explains why those choices deserve respect.

Liberty protects our actions.

Dignity protects our humanity.

This is why due process matters. This is why fairness matters. This is why constitutional democracies are judged not by how they treat the powerful but by how they treat the ordinary and the vulnerable. Because before every file, every allegation, every proceeding and every exercise of State power, stands a human being.
